At present count, there are 46 states as well as Washington, D.C. with abandoned property laws. These laws require for any financial asset that has been inactive for more than 3 years to be declared abandoned and turned over to the payees’ State Treasury. This reversion of property to the state is referred to as Escheat.
The Office of Treasury Management manages escheat activities on behalf of the University schools and departments.
